This past Friday, while I was waiting for Green Kingfishers to reveal themselves, I heard a shuffling noise in some nearby brush. From past experience, I knew that it’s worth it to investigate every sound and bit of movement when looking for wildlife photography opportunities in south Texas. Sometimes, you check out a sound and it turns out to be a rabbit or some other small animal that has already ran off. This time, though, I hit the jackpot with a young Bobcat!

The Bobcat kitten was calling for its mother and posed long enough for me to get a few good shots of it. Eventually, the kingfishers also cooperated for the camera.

As of late, I have also been enjoying my macro lens. This lens is a lot of fun for a couple of basic reasons: (1) There are always lots of insects and small creatures to photograph, and (2) They look amazing when seen at close, macro range.

killer bee

Like most honeybees in south Texas, this one is “Africanized” or known as a “killer bee” because, as with honeybees from Africa, it is aggressive when defending its hive.

Grasshoppers are also common sights, most of them blending in with vegetation.

The macro lens also gave me a close look at common flies.

You never know what you will find when birding or exploring nature in south Texas.
